Trieste, Udine, Aquileia, Miramare Castle (2 days)

1st day: UDINE – AQUILEIA:

Departure early in the morning. Arrival in Udine and guided tour. The city is made up of squares with Venetian charm and ancient buildings: from Piazza Libertà, defined as “the most beautiful Venetian square on the mainland”, to Piazza Matteotti (or Delle Erbe), which, all surrounded by arcades, looks like an open-air living room, you can observe the roundup of ancient and colorful buildings that announce the spirit of Udine. Udine in the eighteenth century was the city of Giambattista Tiepolo who reached his artistic maturity here: today you can admire his masterpieces in the Tiepolo Galleries (in the Patriarchal Palace), in the Duomo, in the church of the Purità.

Free lunch. Transfer to Aquileia for the guided tour. Aquileia has an archaeological area of ​​exceptional importance, considered a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The excavations have revealed the remains of the Roman forum and a basilica, the burial ground, mosaic floors and foundations of houses (Cal and former Cossar funds), statues of the Via Sacra, markets, walls, the river port, of a large mausoleum and more. The splendid Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, which overlooks the historic Piazza Capitolo, was erected on a building of the fourth century, on which numerous extensions were carried out in the following centuries (then largely destroyed during the barbarian invasions). In the temple, you can admire first of all the famous early Christian mosaics (4th century) which constitute a fundamental stage in the history of Italian art.

2nd day: CASTLE OF MIRAMARE – TRIESTE – REDIPUGLIA:

Breakfast. Guided tour of the Miramare Castle. The Miramare Castle is located on the tip of the Grignano promontory. Its position overlooking the sea offers the opportunity to enjoy a splendid view of the Gulf of Trieste. The Castle is surrounded by a beautiful park with precious botanical species where you can enjoy a little relaxation. A noble residence commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, it offers sumptuous original furnishings inside. Free lunch. In the end, a guided tour of Trieste. The fascinating city of Trieste stretches out into the blue of the sea and the sky. This city is a crossroads of religions, architecture, cultures, languages, ethnic groups and original and different products that contain and amalgamate the testimony of Roman and Venetian architecture, but above all the Austro-Hungarian one. The walk of the city is enchanting, from Piazza Unità, one of the most beautiful European squares overlooking the sea, through the streets and squares overlooked by imposing buildings of considerable architectural value. Trieste, Redipuglia, Duino and Miramare Castle (3 days)

 

1st day: REDIPUGLIA – DUINO CASTLE

Departure in the morning from the chosen location. Arrival in Redipuglia and guided tour. The military shrine of Redipuglia is the largest Italian military shrine and one of the largest in the world. Inaugurated in 1938, it houses the bodies of over 100,000 fallen from the Great War. Free lunch. Transfer to Duino, for the guided tour of the Duino Castle, historic private residence of the Princes von Thurm und Taxis, located in a picturesque and panoramic position, on a karst rocky spur overlooking the sea, with a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Trieste. Transfer by bus to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

2nd day: CASTLE OF MIRAMARE – RISIERA SAN SABBA – TRIESTE

Breakfast. Transfer to Miramare for a guided tour of the Castle and the Park, on the tip of the Grignano promontory. Its position overlooking the sea offers the opportunity to enjoy a splendid view of the Gulf of Trieste. The Castle is surrounded by a beautiful park with precious botanical species where it is possible to indulge in a little relaxation. At the end, transfer for the guided tour of the Risiera di San Sabba, the concentration camp in Italy. The Risiera di S. Sabba museum is located in a building that since autumn 1943 was used by the Nazi occupiers as a police detention camp (Polizeihaftlager). It was used both for the sorting of racial and political deportees in Germany and Poland and for the deposit of the looted goods, and for the detention and elimination of Italian, Slovenian and Croatian hostages, partisans and political prisoners. In Gorizia you can breathe the suspended atmosphere typical of a border town: in Piazza Transalpina, physically divided by a wall until 2004, you can walk with one foot in Italy and one in Slovenia. The medieval castle with its enchanting village is a real jewel: from here the view sweeps over the gentle expanses of hills and the entire city, where medieval, baroque and nineteenth-century architecture coexist in a harmonious way. Free lunch. Return trip with arrival scheduled in the evening.
